In the report “New in NATO – Some Starting Points for Sweden,” Stockholm Free World Forum presents a brief summary of some starting points for further discussions and analyses regarding Sweden’s membership in NATO, its direction, and priorities.
Sweden finally became a member on March 7, 2024, 75 years after the alliance’s founding. Before full membership, Sweden had cooperated closely with the defense alliance in various ways, including joint exercises in NATO-led missions and capacity-building assignments.
The report describes the remaining threats to the free world, how Sweden, as a NATO member, should “find its alliance within the alliance,” including through cooperation in the NB8 and similar regional partnerships, and how Sweden should strengthen its commitment and resources to address the increasingly complex global threat environment and actively contribute to the alliance’s common security.
