EPISODE #13 OF THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON: ANGELA GUI

In this episode Anna Rennéus Guthrie, director Stockholm Free World Forum, and Patrik Oksanen, resident senior fellow Stockholm Free World Forum, speak with Angela Gui, doctorate in history at Cambridge University, human rights activist and daughter of the Swedish citizen Gui Minhai, who is unrightfully imprisoned in China, about China’s relations with Sweden and the western world at large.

Angela Gui talks about her father’s illegal kidnapping by the Chinese government and how Swedish political engagement with the Chinese government has been inadequate. Sweden’s fear and unwillingness to make demands and apply pressure on China has deteriorated the situation. She also shares her own experiences of being targeted by the Chinese government through transnational repression.

“There are a lot of different kinds of Chinese interference that we are talking about these days. Because of the ethno-nationalist idea of nationality that the Chinese government has adopted, they want to exert control over people globally who they recognise as their subjects.”
