On May 15th – May 17th The Foreign Policy Academy visited Berlin. The study trip was arranged in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, who had prepared a two-day program focusing on European foreign- and security policy, the relation between Germany and Sweden and the future of the EU.
The trip began with a visit to the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung academy, where the students received a welcome speech by Dr. Lars Hänsel, Head of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Europe and Northern-America. After this, the students received a speech on the topic “New Initiatives, Old Problems: CSDP, NATO, and the Defense of Europe” by Patrick Keller, Coordinator Foreign and Security Policy at KAS. Among the topics which the group discussed with Keller were terrorism and the evolution of German security policy.
Afterwards, the students were given a speech by Tobias Wagner, Crossmedia Editor at ZDF. Together with the group Wagner discussed challenges for public-service in Sweden and Germany in times of fake news and information warfare. Then the group went to the Bundestag to meet with MP Ursula Groden-Kranich (CDU), to discuss family politics and sustainable energy in the future.
The next day began with a visit at the European Council on Foreign Relations. There the group discussed the future of the EU and German defense policy with Almut Möller, Director of ECFR in Berlin. Afterwards the group headed back to KAS to discuss migration challenges with Dr. Christina Catherine Krause, Coordinator for Migration and Refugee Issues at KAS.
The trip concluded with a visit to the Topographie des Terrors.
