Forecast of the Transatlantic Relationship: One Month into Trump’s Second Term.
On February 18th, Stockholm Free World Forum will host a discussion on the transatlantic relationship. This talk will take place nearly one month into Donald Trump’s presidency and will explore the trajectory of the transatlantic relationship and what European countries can anticipate in the coming months.
The U.S and Sweden have a longstanding partnership based on shared values, trade, cultural exchange, and mutual support in global affairs. For Sweden, the transatlantic relationship has recently focused on its new NATO membership and the DCA-agreement.
More recently, transatlantic relations has become one of the most debated topics. So far, we have witnessed various outbursts from President Trump, ranging from claims that Greenland should become American territory and Canada the 51st state to calls for reclaiming control over the Panama Canal, enforcing tariffs on Chinese, Mexican and Canadian imported goods, and proposing a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminium. What do these early actions signal for the transatlantic relationship, and how should Sweden and Europe prepare for the years ahead?
The seminar will be attended by Anthony T. Silberfeld, Head of the Transatlantic Periscope Project, and Gunnar Hökmark, Chairman of Stockholm Free World Forum. The discussion will be moderated by Anna Rennéus Guthrie, Director, Stockholm Free World Forum.
