Ever since its foundation in 2011, Stockholm Free World Forum has advocated for Sweden to become a member of NATO. Stockholm Free World welcomed the news when Sweden decided to apply for a membership in NATO on May 16 2022. Today we have reached a new milestone, all member states have now approved Sweden’s application. The membership is practically complete.
Gunnar Hökmark, president of Stockholm Free World Forum, and Anna Rennéus Guthrie, director of Stockholm Free World Forum, about the announcement:
– With Sweden’s membership in NATO, Sweden becomes safer and Europe stronger. A long period of advocacy for a security policy that lasts even when peace is threatened has now produced a result that we are proud to have contributed to. When others considered it wrong, impossible or dangerous, we stood firm that if you want to protect peace, you have to stand on the side of freedom, says Gunnar Hökmark.
– It is a long-awaited announcement that directly strengthens both Sweden’s and the free world’s security, societies and values, says Anna Rennéus Guthrie and elaborates:
– Today’s announcement also means that Sweden can now focus on our unique contribution to the defense alliance and also eventually find our clear role in it, where we, together with those closest to us, contribute as successfully as possible, as quickly as possible.
– Stockholm Free World looks forward to continuing to be an initiator and gathering point for analysis and discussions concerning Sweden’s security policy future with NATO.
Stockholm Free World Forum has worked in a number of different ways, including through the production of reports, books and other forms of material as well as organizing conferences and talks at different levels, network building and dialogue with various actors, for what with today’s announcement soon is reality.
