Arctic Security Must Rest on Northern European Agency – Not on American Whims

“In today’s grave situation, we must be able to hold several thoughts in our heads at once. Greenland and the Arctic, in a broader sense, are de facto strategically vital, and the security situation there has deteriorated in recent years. This remains entirely true regardless of the manner in which the message has been delivered by the United States. At the same time, we are witnessing how the region’s security is further undermined by American threats, blackmail, and impulsive behavior. The newly established NATO operation Arctic Sentry, to which Sweden contributes JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, demonstrates a resolve to preserve Arctic security. However, taken as a whole, the situation demands a different level of agency from other Arctic and Northern European nations than what we have seen thus far.”
