Frivärld has contributed to a new report published by NATO Allied Command Transformation’s Open Perspectives Exchange Network (OPEN): Securing the Peace: Informing Resilient Future Generations in Deterrence and Defence – Perspectives from Sweden. The report was co-authored by Eric Adamson, a former analyst at Frivärld (the Stockholm Free World Forum), together with Emmelie Andersson of the Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency.
Using Sweden as a case study, the report examines how an entire population, particularly generations with no first-hand experience of great-power confrontation, can be prepared for crisis and war. It shows how Sweden, in a remarkably short time, built strong public support for NATO and a high willingness to defend the country through transparent communication about threats, total defence education in schools, and joint civil-military planning.
The report concludes with concrete recommendations for NATO members: clear communication of threats and preparedness guidance, age-appropriate information for children and young people, and deeper civil-military planning integration. Its central message: resilience can be built, and an informed public is a resource, not a liability, in crisis or war.
