New Report: From ”Mother of All Trade Deals” to Strategic Partnership: The Logic of Indo–European Convergence

The EU-India summit in January 2026 resulted in both a long-awaited free trade agreement – the “Mother of all Trade Deals” – and the first comprehensive security and defence partnership between the two parties. Together, they mark a genuine strategic turning point and the beginning of a broader realignment between two of the world’s most significant pluralistic powers.

In this report, Karl Lallerstedt, normally a senior analyst at FOI but writing here in a private capacity, explains the logic behind the Indo-European convergence and argues that both sides should actively seize the security opportunity that the agreement creates.
