Outlook: A global trade on the move

In January, the EU and India took a historic step forward with what has been called ”the Mother of All Trade Deals” – and since then, India has become increasingly important to Sweden and Europe, most recently demonstrated by Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Gothenburg and the new strategic partnership between Sweden and India.

Today, we gathered for a discussion on the future of global trade, based on two current analyses. Karl Lallerstedt, senior analyst at FOI (the Swedish Defence Research Agency), presented his new briefing paper From ”Mother of All Trade Deals” to Strategic Partnership: The Logic of Indo–European Convergence. The paper views the EU–India agreement as the beginning of a broader strategic alignment between two of the world’s most significant pluralistic powers.

The discussion also featured Stefan Fölster (Associate Professor of Economics and Senior Fellow, Stockholm Free World Forum), who provided an updated assessment in ”Global Trade on Shaky Ground: Crisis–Growth–Innovation?”, Asees Ahuja (Director of EU Policy, Confederation of Swedish Enterprise), and Gunnar Wetterberg (historian, author, and columnist). The conversation was moderated by Gunnar Hökmark and Anna Rennéus Guthrie.
