Towards a New NATO

Although Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO accession coincided with a weakened transatlantic link under the Trump administration, membership has strengthened regional cooperation in the Nordic and Baltic regions. In a Europe striving for increased military independence, the countries’ active participation in NATO, the EU, and Ukrainian support functions is now crucial for ensuring both national and regional stability.

In this report, Frivärld’s former Senior Fellow Minna Ålander writes about the new NATO and Sweden’s role within it. Some of the report’s key points are:

  • The Nordic and European awakening: In the vacuum left by the US, European allies are now providing the new contributions to the northern flank. We are seeing a rapid integration of Nordic defense structures (through Finnish-Swedish cooperation and NORDEFCO), while the UK, France, Germany, and Poland are significantly stepping up their military and strategic presence in our region.

  • A forced European nuclear dilemma: As the US actively undermines the credibility of its extended deterrence, Europe faces unavoidable choices regarding nuclear weapons. The report discusses France’s offer to develop a “European dimension” to its nuclear capabilities, a discussion that now involves countries like Sweden and Poland.

  • Sweden’s exposed but central role: The Nordic region’s geographical proximity to the Kola Peninsula makes it particularly exposed, but simultaneously increases its strategic value within NATO. Sweden and the other Nordic countries are now taking on extensive operational responsibility, including Sweden’s role as the framework nation for NATO’s Forward Land Force (FLF) in northern Finland.
