Since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has systematically abducted Ukrainian children from occupied territories. These children, often taken under the pretense of ”humanitarian evacuations,” have been subjected to forced deportations, Russification, and adoption into Russian families.
This seminar will delve into the mechanisms behind these abductions, the international legal implications, and the broader impact on Ukrainian children and society, with:
Alina Zubkovych, Chair, Nordic Ukraine Forum
Svitlana Osipchuk, Program Director, War Childhood Museum Ukraine
Oksana Lebedeva, Founder, Gen. Ukrainian (via link)
Discussion will be moderated by Frivärld Director Anna R. Guthrie. Additional speakers may be added.
The War Childhood Museum (WCM) in Sarajevo is the world’s only museum dedicated to the experiences of children affected by war. The WCM started working in Ukraine in 2018, and in 2020 opened an office in Kyiv. Since then, WCM Ukraine has documented the experiences of over 600 children and youth affected by the Russian war on Ukraine, both before and after the full-scale invasion.
Gen.Ukrainian is a non-governmental organisation that specialises in issues of childhood during the war and mental rehabilitation of children and adolescents who have experienced psychological trauma as a result of war, such as loss of parents, captivity or forced displacement.
