Anders Åslund, senior fellow of Stockholm Free World Forum (Frivärld), argues in Kyiv Post that Ukraine, contrary to current Western pessimism, has good chances of defeating Russia. Modern wars rarely end in negotiated settlements, and imperial powers like Russia have historically lost colonial wars. Moreover, Russia’s advantages in population and GDP are overstated, as Ukraine’s motivation, freer society, and Western support offset those factors, while Russia’s corrupt system drains its war effort. Instead of fearing Russian instability, Åslund argues that the West should focus on seizing frozen Russian assets to double Ukraine’s military budget, enabling victory and hastening the fall of Putin’s regime.
